In the future electronic devices will work more and more autonomously. Hence solar systems will play an important role if sufficient irradiation is available. They guarantee independent operation in locations where a connection to the power grid is complicated and expensive.

The typical modularity of solar cells and modules allows various systems with regard to voltage, current and area ranging from Milliwatts to Gigawatts. Further advantages of solar systems are their low maintenance requirement (no cost for exchange of primary batteries or generator fuels), their environmentally friendly operation (no exhaust or noise), their long life time (at least 30 years), their esthetical look etc.
